Map Your Community!
Do you want to know how safe your community is and how it compares
to other communities in Montgomery County? You can visualize this
information using a region map. In this example, you will be walking
through the steps to plot on a map crime incidents by communities.
We are using the Crime dataset from the dataMontgomery catalog to illustrate this example.
Step 1: Open the visualization canvas
From the Crime data set page, select the Visualize option on the top right hand corner. Then in the 'Chart' section select the 'Launch New Visualization' option.
Choose a name for your new visualization and select "Create Visualization".
Step 2: Setup for creating a Map
Select the 'Map' icon from the list of available plotting options. Then select the 'Location' column from the Geo Column in the Data Selection menu.
Step 3: Plotting your community
dataMontgomery provides the option to create plots with data items aggregated by communities, zip codes, councils or municipalities! For this example, we will be plotting by communities.
Select the 'Communities' option from the Region box in the Data Selection menu to map by community.
The resulting region map shows crime incidents aggregated by Community.
Step 4: Adding Filter to Map
You can also filter your map for specific crimes like 'simple assault on citizens.' To filter your map for specific crimes, click on 'Add a Filter' and select the 'Crime 2' column.
Step 5: Adding condition for Filtering
Click on the 'Crime Name 2' filter and set option to 'IS'. Then select 'Simple Assault', then click on Apply.
The region map will automatically refresh to show data aggregated by community.
You can compare and contrast the number of incidents in and near your community. As you move your pointer over the communities, you will see a fly out showing details for each community.
